Just had the pleasure to read People of the Book and answer some of the back of the book Questions for Discussion. Wouldn’t it be fun to make the movie into a culture changing phenomena by including the “writing with many pens” theme a connection to the real world?! I would love to participate in an official Book of the People blogsite that was actually designed to discuss the Questions for Discussion and organize posts into categories of logic (logos), authority (ethos) and emotion (pathos)? Of course, other organizing categories may be necessary as well, maybe “tangent” and “comic” categories? Imagine how this could demystify human debate for many people. As a movie producer/director wouldn’t it be great to be written up in future school textbooks as your movie being, along with the creation of the internet, a evolutionary push for mankind in the direction of actually becoming more humane?! Actually becoming homo sapiens sapiens?! You can do that!
    Have fun!

  • May I ask, Geraldine, are you the one who is the original author of the line: “Into one grain, there come a hundred harvests….In a single heart is a whole world contained.”?
If yes, then THANK YOU. If no, I would be grateful for the original author. But, alas, I understand that so much of great literature, great writing is unknown… reflecting The Divine Mystery of this Dear World.

    • It was actually from an essay on miniaturist painters…as in the book, supposedly it was inscribed on a rice grain. But I can’t recall the source of the essay at this point…

  • My 25 year old granddaughter suggested that I might like this book, as did she, two years ago. She got it for me at the library, and I was totally blown away by this incredible story, the wonderful writing, and have not stopped being so impressed by you, Ms. Brooks. My two children both gave me copies for Christmas that year, and I have finally sat down to re-read (as I’ve always meant to do with other books, but never have), and it is as freah and rewarding as initially. It’s as if I must devour every word! What a wonderful book/story. Thanks you so much for giving it such warmth and life. And intelligence, Would you be my friend? as is your book?

I am reviewing People of the Book for our Book Club next week. It’s an amazing, well researched read with the fact and fiction combined to make it, what I consider, perfect historical fiction. My question to Ms. Brooks is, “Why did you believe you needed the chapters on the mother/daughter relationship, as well as the sexual encounter with Ozren? There was so much going on with the Sarajevo Haggadah that I found Hanna’s personal life not so interesting and rather distracting. I’m no writer so I suspect you had a reason for that. Thank you.
